ED814 Evaluating the Effectiveness of the
Educational Process

Final Project:
Certification in the Training & Graphic Design Industries

Certification of Graphic Designers

Currently, the Graphic Artists Guild, the primary organization for graphic designers and artists, has no independent certification program. Much heated debate had occurred over the topic of certifying graphic designers. How much experience do they need, how much education, what kind of test should be issued, portfolio reviews, keeping a very subjective industry objective has been an issue of much debate.

Several vendor-neutral certificate/certification programs exist at a variety of colleges and universities. I examine several on-line programs.

The largest form of certification in graphic design is vendor-specific certification, that is, receiving a certificate from Adobe or Macromedia.

I have also examined Ontario, Canada's Registered Graphic Designer designation. It is created by an independent organization and the designation is much like a CPA, being listed after the designers name. Qualification is difficult and requires a combination of education, experience, a written test and portfolio review.
